Gang of Four

  • Gang of Four personify the post-punk movement they helped develop. The Leeds, England band, formed in 1977, offers an artsy punk rock-influenced take on funk and dub. Named after the disgraced quartet of Chinese Communist leaders, the band's cerebral lyrics comment on the apathy and luxury of life in first-world nations. The group's 1979 debut album, Entertainment! remains a touchstone of punk, indie and alternative rock, having inspired such bands as Fugazi, Rage Against The Machine and Franz Ferdinand. In 2005, Gang of Four released Return the Gift, an album with new recordings of their classic songs. It is expected to be followed by an album of new material in 2008, their first in 13 years.
