Game and Watch Gallery is a collection of Nintendo's original Game and Watch games. The game was developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo. It was released on Game Boy on May 1997 in North America, February 1, 1997 in Japan, and August 28, 1997 in Europe. The game is the first installment of the Game and Watch Gallery series which compiles the old Game and Watch games.
Gameplay
Game and Watch Gallery compiles 4 of Nintendo's games from the Game and Watch handheld library. The games are presented in the classic mode, which is the game as it was played in its original form, and the modern mode, which changes the game mechanics and includes Mario and company. Each mode also comes in the Normal and Hard difficulty.
Manhole has a set of 2 roads with 4 holes on them. The player takes the role of a single person who can only fill up 1 hole at a time. The person must be moved to make way for the pedestrians who walk across the 2 roads and prevent them from falling down the holes. In the modern mode, the player takes the role of Yoshi who must raise platforms to plug up the hole. When a pedestrian walks across the hole, the platform falls and Yoshi must raise the platform again.
Fire has the player take the role of 2 fireman with a trampoline. There are people who are jumping out of a flaming building and the firemen must catch them on the trampoline in order to get them to the ambulance. In the modern mode, the player takes the roles of Mario and Luigi who must rescue Toads, Yoshis, and Donkey Kong Jrs who have different falling speeds.
Octopus has the player take the role of a scuba diver who must collect treasure chest. As he collects treasure, he must also avoid the extending tentacles of the octopus that is protecting the treasure. In modern mode, the player takes the role of Mario. As he collects more treasure at a time, he will lower his walking speed but he will gain more points when he returns to his boat. He can also throw his treasure at the tentacles to avoid contact with them.
Oil Panic has the player collect drops of oil and throwing them into a moving bucket outside. The player can only collect 3 drops at at time and he must throw them into the bucket before he is able to collect more. In modern mode, the player takes the role of Mario and he holds 2 buckets that can hold 3 drops each. He can also spin around to switch buckets. He must also feed the oil to Yoshi who can reach the oil from a specific distance
The player earns stars from each game by reaching scores that are multiples of 200. The stars stop at 1000, meaning only 5 stars are earned for each game and each difficulty. The stars are then used to unlock hidden secrets. If the player can reach 1000 points in the Modern mode, he will unlock the Star difficulty which is the hardest difficulty.
