The game was released on the Game Boy Advance on October 28, 2002 in North America. This game is the 4th in Nintendo's Game and Watch Gallery series which compiles the old Game and Watch games.
Gameplay
Game and Watch Gallery 4 initially comes with 6 different games. These games include the following:
Fire is the same game that was presented in the original Game and Watch Gallery. The player controls 2 firemen who must save people who are jumping out of a burning building. In the modern mode, Mario and Luigi must save Toads, Yoshis, and Donkey Kong Juniors who are jumping out of a burning castle. Each character type has different jumping heights.
Boxing has the player controlling a boxer. The player must watch for his opponent's actions so that he will know when to punch and when to block. Each opponent has 5 units of energy that is depleted whenever he is hit. When his life is emptied, he will be knocked back. If he his knocked back when at the far end of the ring, he will be knocked out. In modern mode, Luigi will face against a Wiggler, a Boo, and Waluigi. Each opponent has different fighting strategies.
Rain Shower takes place during a rainy day. The player must move between 2 separate floors in order to move the laundry and keep them from being hit by raindrops. In the modern mode, Mario must move his friends to keep them from being hit by Bowser's paint balloons. Occasionally, moons will appear which Mario’s friends without penalty can catch. If the player collects 5 moons without missing then he will be given a chance for extra points.
Mario's Cement Factory has the player controlling a factory worker who must fill up tanks with cement as well as empty the tanks into waiting trucks. In modern mode, Mario must fill the tanks with cookie dough before emptying the tanks into ovens. Occasionally, Boos will appear and hide in the tanks.
Donkey Kong Jr. is the same game that was presented in Game and Watch Gallery 3. The player controls Donkey Kong Jr. who must travel through an obstacle course while avoiding alligators and birds. The goal is to grab a hanging key and unlock the cage that is imprisoning Donkey Kong. The game plays similarly in modern mode. The difference is that whenever Donkey Kong is let out of his cage, the obstacle course changes.
Donkey Kong 3 is a multiplayer game in which 2 players must blow bugs at each other. The players use bug spray to push bugs at each other and points are made when the bugs hit their opponents. In modern mode, Mario and Donkey Kong blow bubbles at Boos and fireballs to hit each other. Players need to fill their bubble supply, which causes the Boos to fly towards them.
Like in the previous installments, there are un-lockable games that can be earned from getting high scores in the initial titles.
Chef is the same game that was presented in Game and Watch Gallery 2. You play as a chef who must flip various food items and keep them from falling onto the floor. The modern mode has Peach flipping food items until they are ready to be fed to Yoshi.
Mario Brothers is the same game that was presented in Game and Watch Gallery 3. You play as 2 factory workers who must climb ladders while moving packages across conveyor belts and into a delivery truck. The game plays the same in modern mode except there are moments when the conveyor belts will move backwards, keeping the packages from reaching the truck. At those moments, you must flip a lever to get the belt to move forward again.
Donkey Kong is the same game that was presented in Game and Watch Gallery 2. The game has a construction worker climbing up a building in order to rescue a kidnapped woman from a gorilla. He must go through an obstacle course as he avoids barrels and hanging platforms in order to destroy the platform the gorilla is standing on. The game works similarly in modern mode where Mario must rescue Peach from Donkey Kong. When you destroy, the platform Donkey Kong is standing on, you will be sent to a different obstacle course.
Octopus is the same game that was presented in Game and Watch Gallery. A scuba diver must gather piles of treasure and take them back to his boat, all while avoiding octopus tentacles. In the modern game, collecting large amounts of treasure will slow down your movement speed. However, you could also throw your treasure at the tentacles to keep them from reaching you.
Fire Attack has the player control a cowboy who must protect his fort from attacking Indians. The cowboy is moved between 4 different positions and must hit each Indian and flaming arrow that move towards him. In the modern mode, Mario is trying to protect a giant statue of himself from an attack by Bob-Ombs and Bullet Bills. Sometimes chickens and tomatoes will fly towards you. They can be collected for extra points.
Museum Games
New to the series is the ability to play the museum games. These games are only available in classic mode. These games include the following:
- Manhole has a man moving between 4 different manholes in order to prevent pedestrians from falling into the sewers.
- Tropical Fish has a house owner who must use a fishbowl in order to get his fish jumping from one tank to another.
- Mario's Bombs Away has a soldier carrying bombs to the enemy hideout while preventing the bomb from being lit by his enemies.
- Parachute has a man moving his rowboat in order to catch skydivers who are jumping out of a helicopter.
- Bomb Sweeper has the player travel through a series of mazes while trying to defuse a bomb within a time limit. Certain walls can be destroyed but it may also cause other walls to appear, which could potentially prevent the player from reaching the bombs.
- Climber has the player jump up a series of platforms before reaching a condor at the top.
- Safe Buster has a safe guard catch bombs in order to prevent a bank robbery. The bombs are stored in tanks which can only carry 3 bombs at a time. They must be emptied before more bombs appear. One of the tanks will send flying torches at the robber, which could cause his bomb supply to explode.
- Lifeboat has the player control 1 or 2 lifeboats. He must catch passengers who are jumping out of a broken cruiser. The boat must be emptied at shore before being allowed to catch more.
- Zelda has Link move through a series of dungeon floors as he battles against Moblins and Stalfos. At the end of each dungeon, Link must battle against a dragon in order to retrieve a piece of the Triforce.
