On July 3, 2009, police in Gaffney, South Carolina confirmed that they were looking for a serial killer. The same suspect is believed to have shot and killed five people in the area in five days. The first murder took place on June 27, 2009.
On July 6, 2009, police shot and killed a man who they believe were responsible for the killings. The man, 41-year-old Patrick Tracy Burris, was shot after officers responded to a burglary complaint.
