Gaelic is an adjective used to describe the language and culture of the Gael’s collectively known as and originating from the Celtic nation. The Celts had an original unified language called “Old Celtic”, which can be trace back through the Indo-European languages back to the original Ur-language. Old Celtic, the origin of Gaelic, predates Latin by a few thousand years and has close similarity to the precursor of Latin, called Italic. .http://gaelic.com/, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_languages
There are six languages that are associated with the Celts proper, these include the early Irish, Scottish, Manx, Welsh, Breton, Cornish languages. Of the Gaelic languages proper, only three of the six are associated as being of the Gaelic branch and these are the Irish, Scottish and Manx forms of Gaelic. The word “Gaelic”, is actually an English word for any of the three languages which are derived from the six Celtic languages. Of significance, only the Irish and Scottish Gaelic have survived in any number. The Gaelic languages were spoken in Ireland, Scotland and Man, and under the British expansionism, were once outlawed and made illegal to speak or be taught. Gaelic was in danger of being exterminated in many of the traditional Gaelic speaking areas, but now a Gaelic renaissance has slowed this trend if not yet reversed it.http://books.google.ca/books?id=ecKH5TWDZi4C&pg=PA233&lpg=PA233&dq=Gaelic+language+unlawful&source=bl&ots=KEKh58KwO6&sig=mIUbZtMkr8GMpSOhTcl9hRFJXXY&hl=en&ei=Mv2pS6euHIX7lwfeoOTlBA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CAgQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=&f=false Today once again, Gaelic is the national language of Scotland and Ireland, in Ireland it is pronounced ‘Gay-Lick’ while in Scotland they pronounce it as ‘Ga-Lick’.
