On February 26, 2010, Moammar Gadhafi called for a jihad against the neutral country Switzerland.
Gadhafi was speaking at a conference marking the berth of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and was quoted as saying, "...any Muslim in any part of the world who works with Switzerland is an apostate, is against Muhammad, God, and the Qur'an... let us fight against Switzerland, Zionism, and foreign aggression."http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/feb/25/muammar-gaddafi-libya
Quotes from Gadhafi on the Subject
- "Let us fight against Switzerland, Zionism and foreign aggression... this is not terrorism... There is a big difference between terrorism and jihad, which is a right to armed struggle."http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/feb/25/muammar-gaddafi-libya
- "The masses of Muslims must go to all airports in the Islamic world and prevent any Swiss plane landing, to all harbors and prevent any Swiss ships docking, inspect all shops and markets to stop any Swiss goods being sold."http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/feb/25/muammar-gaddafi-libya
Background on Gadhafi's Hatred of Switzerland
In 2008, Gadhafi's son and daughter-in-law were arrested in Geneva for assault after they allegedly beat two servants at a hotel in which the couple was staying. They were released shortly afterward and the charges were dropped, but Gadhafi was so outraged that he took decisive actions of shutting down Swiss firms at work in Libya and arresting two Swiss businessmen, as well as canceling most airline flights between the two nations.
Then in 2009, Gadhafi asked the United Nations to simply abolish Switzerland as a country, and divide the land equally among Italy, Germany, and France.
Last November, Swiss voters backed a referendum that proposed the banning of building minarets (architectural towers attached to an Islamic mosque). The Swiss People's party claimed the minarets were a sign of islamisation. The move was opposed by the Swiss government.http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/feb/25/muammar-gaddafi-libya
