The G-String, also called a gee-string, gee string or thong, is a narrow piece of underwear, mostly worn by women, holding the genitals, but revealing the buttocks, and is attached to a hip-band. The g-string is worn as swimwear, where it will resemble an normal bikini bottom from the front, but appear almost absent from behind, as the string is hidden between the bottocks.
The origin of the g-string is unknown, but may refer to the geestring, which was the string attached to the loincloth of Native Americans, and later referred to the loincloth itself. The "G" may have referred to "Groin", which used to be a taboo term.http://books.google.com/books?id=W-gTAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA249&dq=geestringhttp://www.nytimes.com/1991/08/04/magazine/on-language-ode-on-a-g-string.html
The modern g-string was first used by exotic dancers, but became mainstream as swimwear when women in Brazil started wearing it. In Brazil, nude bathing is mostly prohibited, but women appear to compete showing off as much skin as possible. The g-string allowed them to show off their buttocks, while remaining clothed.
According to historians, the thong first appeared in public in the United States in 1939, when New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia mandated that the city's nude dancers cover themselves. Fashion designer Rudi Gernreich was the first to introduce the thong bikini in 1974.http://pages.prodigy.net/lordshadow2/history_of_thong.htm
While it was long not-done to reveal underwear, in recent years the g-string has become more and more accepted, and can often be seen when women wearing a g-string bend over to pick up something. When the string is visible above the pants, this is often referred to "Whale Tail", referring to the shape of the visible part of the string.
The g-string, or thong was the main subject of a song by Sisqo, called the "Thong Song".
