  • A futon is a thin mattress that is set on a couch shaped futon frame so that it can be used for sitting. To make a bed the futon frame can convert into a flat bed frame or the futon mattress can be put on the floor.
  • Futon covers

Get a futon cover that you can remove easily. Make sure it is made of a washable non-shrinking material. If your futon doesn't have a removable cover consider investing in a futon slip cover or making your own.

A removable futon cover allows you to wash off any stains that might build up with everyday use. Having several futon covers allows you to change the look of your living room without changing your furniture.

  • Origins

The futon originated from the Japanese futon which is a two inch thick mat with a structure similar to a quilt. They have cloth exterior and a cotton or synthetic batting. Japanese futons are used as sleeping mats and laid out on the floor before bedtime. They are traditionally folded into closets during the day. An extra mattress is sometimes used underneath the Japanese futon for additional support.
