  • A Furby is an electronic toy that interacts with users by speaking and showing facial expressions. The toy resembles a a furry owl with large ears.
  • Holiday Must-Have

    In 1998, the Furby was listed as a "must-have" toy for the holiday season. In 1998, over 1.8 million units were sold with a retail price of $35. With the demand so high for the toy, the resale price began to soar as stores sold out. Furbys were selling through newspapers and on eBay for anywhere between $100-$300 a piece. Sellers were giving special names to the Furbys, including biker Furby, wedding Furby, etc. and listing these are hard-to-find, collector edition. The following year, Furby sold 4 million units. Over the first three years of production, more than 40 million units had been sold, 27 million sold in the first year.
  • Furby Types

    After the success of original Furbys, Tiger Electronics released a number of varieties of Furbys.

    1. Furby Babies: Released in 1999. These were smaller than the originals and had higher voices. They switch from Furbish to English must quicker than the originals. They came with built in "Easter Eggs" and games. They were available in 24 different colors and six different eye colors.
    2. Emoto-Tronic Furby: Released in August 2005. These were larger than the original Furby and have a more emotional face and voice recognition system. They have the ability to communicate with other Emoto-tronic Furbys and new Furby Babies. They lack light sensors and basic motion sensors.
    3. Emoto-Tronic Furby Babies: Released in 2006. They have more a baby appearance to them, with less features, limited vocabulary and a lower level of interactivity.
    4. Emoto-Tronic Funky Furby: Released in August 2006. They are available in two color cominations, pink and yellow and purple and green. They can sing three songs and dance, with the ability to learn dance routines.
