Often used as a generic term for recreational flying discs, "Frisbee" is actually the registered trademark of the toy company Wham-O. There are many variations of Frisbee play, including Frisbee golf and canine Frisbee where the master throws the disc in any number of tricky ways that nevertheless fail to keep his dog from tracking it down and making a heroic catch.

A Happy Accident
William Russell Frisbie's Frisbie Pie Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut, was a favorite of college students in the eastern United States in the late-1800s, and at some point the kids figured out how Frisbie's pie tins could fly when flipped through the air. Many folks like to claim having invented the popular pastime, but this origin is the best-documented and most-accepted.
