Freshwater fish are the most popular type of pet kept in home aquariums. Freshwater fish tend to be cheaper and easier to maintain than their saltwater cousins.
There are literally hundreds of varieties of freshwater fish available to fishkeepers, also known as "aquarists." Some of the more popular varieties include angelfish, guppies, goldfish, betta fish and African cichlids.
Freshwater fish can be broken down into two major categories: Tropical fish, which are generally more colorful and require heated waters, and cold water fish such as goldfish, Siamese fighting fish and koi that do not need to be heated.
