The French Open is one of the four major tennis championship tournaments held each year in Paris, France.
In the 2009 French Open, Svetlana Kuznetsova won the women's tounament, defeating Dinara Safina in the final round on June 6, 2009.
Roger Federer won the men's French Open tournament on June 7, 2009. The win marked Federer's 14th career Grand Slam title.

History
In 1891, the event was first held as a national tournament. The first woman's tournament was held in 1897.Up until 1924, the tournament was only open to tennis players that were licensed in France.
In 1925, the event was open to international tennis players and it was held on a grass surface instead of the red clay that is is held on today.
In 2007, it was announced that both men and woman would provide equal prize money for all rounds. This was the first time ever for this.
