Freeganism is an anti-consumerism movement. Freegans avoid consuming resources and buying things by finding alternate methods of obtaining food, products, and services. This includes, but is not limited to, the exchange of used items, dumpster diving, composting, recycling, repairing broken items and squatting in abandoned buildings. Some freegans also choose to be unemployed, as they believe working contributes to a damaging capitalist system.

Dumpster Diving
Supermarkets dispose of a great deal of food that, while expired, is still unspoiled. Freegans believe disposing of edible food, which could go to feed the hungry and is instead going to a landfill, is morally reprehensible.Food Waste in the U.S.
- Over 40% of all food is thrown away
- 1.3 pounds per person: Food thrown away daily
- 12% of all waste is food
Freecycling
Freecycling allows people to offer their used items to others for free, usually via e-mail lists. Participants may only offer items for free, not for sale or trade, and offers are generally restricted to PG items (no items of an adult nature allowed, and no weapons). The main rule of Freecycling lists is "be nice".
