Established in 1987, Free Tibet is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to ending the Chinese occupation of Tibet. The generic term "Free Tibet" is also used to denote the International Tibet Independence Movement in its entirety.

Tibetan Independence
The Tibetan Independence movement has existed in various forms since 1959, when an armed insurrection was mounted by remnants of the Tibetan civil authority against China, which had annexed the kingdom in 1951. The Tibetan government has functioned in exile since that time in Dharamsala, India under the leadership of the the 14th Dalai Lama.
