Freda Payne is a singer and actor. The 1970 hit "Band of Gold" was her breakout single. Payne has acted in movies and had parts in a few musicals, and once hosted her own talk show. She appeared on American Idol singing her hit song along with other disco icons.

History
Freda Payne began her career in entertainment singing jingles for Detroit radio stations at the age of 13. She was offered record contracts by Berry Gordy of Motown Records and jazz legend Duke Ellington, but had to decline because her mother wanted her to complete her education.
