Fred DeLuca is the co-founder of the Subway franchise of sandwich shops. At the age of seventeen DeLuca borrowed $1,000 from a family friend Peter Buck and started his first Subway sandwich shop as he was trying to raise money to pay for college at the University of Bridgeport. His first Subway was founded in an average location, yet when he first opened doors people were coming in droves to pick up their sandwiches after promoting the name as "Pete's Submarines," which was later changed to "Pete's Subway," and later he simply called it "Subway" as millions know it today. In 2009 there are over 30,000 franchises in 87 countries, and the company does over $9 billion in sales annually. Pete made it on the Forbes 400 billionaire list as the 242nd richest man in America in 2007.
