Frank Mir is a mixed martial arts fighter and former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion.
Career in MMA
Frank Mir made his MMA debut against Jerome Smith on July 14, 2001. The fight was set up by UFC matchmaker Joe Silva for Mir to prove himself as a fighter. Mir won the match, as well as his next bout. Mir would next defeat Roberto Travern at UFC 34: High Voltage.
Mir had several more successful UFC bouts before facing Tim Sylvia at UFC 54 for the vacant UFC heavyweight title in 2004. Mir won the match (and the title) by TKO when the match was stopped after 50 seconds from Mir breaking Sylvia's forearm.
Three months after winning the UFC title, Mir suffered severe leg injuries from a motorcycle accident. Mir was stripped of his title in 2005 after he was unable to face Andrei Arlovski. Mir eventually recovered from the injury and returned to fighting on February 4, 2006.
Frank Mir lost two of his first three fights following his injury to Brandon Vera and Marcio Cruz. Mir took an eight month leave of absence and returned once again at UFC 74 to defeat Antoni Hardonk via submission. Mir would go on to defeat Brock Lesnar at UFC 81 and then became the first man to ever knockout Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 92. At UFC 100 in his rematch against Brock Lesnar he was knocked out in the second round by a vicious ground and pound attack. Mir bounced back from his loss to impressively defeat Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 by submission on December 12, 2009.
