American actress Frances McDormand won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her turn as the sweet but smart local police chief Marge Gunderson in the Coen Brothers' 1996 film Fargo. She was also nominated for her leading role in 2005's North Country and for supporting roles in Mississippi Burning and Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous. Her film debut came in 1984 in the Coens' Blood Simple, and she married Joel Coen that same year.
