In this video, Mahalo math expert Allison Moffett teaches you about fractions as parts of a whole number.
What are Fractions?
Fractions are a way of expressing numbers that are only pieces of a whole. For example, if you have four quarters and you use one to feed a parking meter, you are left with three out of the original four that you had to begin with. We write that number as three over four (see left) and say "three fourths."
Vocabulary
Denominator: The bottom number or the number of pieces that were in the original to begin with. In the quarter example, the denominator would be four.
Numerator: The number on top or the number of pieces that you are dealing with. In the quarter example, the numerator is three.
Solving Problems with Fractions
If you started out with one dollar in quarters, that is the same as four out of four quarters. But then you took away one quarter, or one out of four quarters. That leaves you with three out of four quarters.
