  • The FBI arrested six men on May 7, 2007, for allegedly plotting to attack Fort Dix U.S. Army base in New Jersey. The men were arrested while attempting to purchase AK-47 and M-16 assault rifles.

    Five of the six arrested men went to trial on October 20, 2008. The prosecution stated that they were inspired by al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden. Defense lawyers claimed that a fair trial was impossible given the publicity surrounding the trial.     The Fort Dix plotters came to the attention of authorities in 2006 via a surveillance video featuring 10 men "shooting assault weapons at a firing range...while calling for jihad and shouting in Arabic 'Allah Akbar'..."The Washington Post: 6 Charged in Plot to Attack Army Post(May 8, 2007) The FBI had been informed of the group's activities for a year prior to the arrest.
