In September of 2007 Police arrested the highest ranking surviving leader of the Khmer Rouge. Nuon Chea acted as second in command to former Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot when the party seized control of Cambodia in 1975. From 1975 to 1979, over 1.7 million people were executed or died of starvation or exhaustion from forced labor during the government-sanctioned genocide on Cambodia's "Killing Fields."
