Foreskin's Lament

Foreskin's Lament is author Shalom Auslander's sardonic memoir about his Orthodox Jewish upbringing.

Plot Synopsis

In Foreskin's Lament Shalom Auslander struggles with the decision whether or not he should give his son a bris and circumcise his penis. Auslander recounts his own childhood growing up Jewish in New York.

Critical Reception

  • "Shalom Auslander writes like Philip Roth's angry nephew. Foreskin's Lament is a scathing theological rant, a funny, oddly moving coming-of-age memoir, and an irreverent meditation on family, marriage, and cultural identity. God may be a bit irritated by this book, but I loved it." -Tom Perrotta
  • "An often breathtakingly irreverent look at religion and the humorous side of exorcising the past." -Kirkus Reviews
  • "But this memoir is too wonky to engage the reader's sympathy or cut free Auslander's persona from the swath of stereotype.." -Publishers Weekly
