  • The Ford Escape is an SUV from American automaker Ford Motor Company available in both standard and hybrid models. All-wheel-drive is an option on all models. The Ford Escape was thoroughly redesigned for the 2008 model year and received stronger engines and a 6-speed automatic for 2009.

In March 2009, President Obama got a chance to take a look at a plug-in hybrid model of the Escape while visiting Pomona, California, home to Southern California Edison's electric vehicle garage. The president visited the facility to promote his planned $2.4 billion in funding to help develop plug-in vehicles.Boston.com: Obama gets peek at Escape... (March 19, 2009)

"After a thorough update to the exterior and interior for the 2008 model year, the Ford Escape receives new powertrains for 2009. The previous 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engines is replaced by a more powerful 2.5-liter four that also replaces the Hybrid's 4-cylinder, while the V6 receives more power. The previous 4-speed automatic is replaced by a modern 6-speed transmission."— JB car pagesJB car pages: 2009 Ford Escape Review

"The biggest change, though, is that you no longer have to buy one of the bottom-feeder trim levels to get four-cylinder fuel economy. The 2.5 is available all the way up to the Escape Limited and Mercury Mariner Premier versions. Small engines are big now, even with buyers who can afford more."— Motor TrendMotor Trend: First Drive: 2009 Ford Escape
