Domestic Violence Charges

On September 16, 2010, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was charged with eight crimes, including felony grand larceny, felony coercion, misdemeanor domestic battery and misdemeanor harassment. Mayweather's ex-girlfriend, Josie Harris, with whom he has three children, alleged that Mayweather stole cell phones from her and two of the children, grabbed her hair, hit her and twisted her arm after finding out about her relationship with another man. Floyd Mayweather Jr Boxing Career

After an impressive amateur career which saw Mayweather post a career mark of 84-6 and a bronze medal in the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta, Georgia, Mayweather set out on a professional career in the squared circle.

His first fight was a second round knockout of Roberto Apodaca on October 11, 1996 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He proceeded to obliterate early opponents, until he received his first title bout on October 3, 1998 against Genaro Hernandez for the WBC Super Featherweight Title. Hernandez brought a record of 38-1-1 into the contest, but was beaten into submission, forcing his corner to retire at the end of the eighth round, giving Mayweather his first title. http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=352&cat=boxer

He'd carry that belt on into the new millenium, winning convincingly over tough opponents such as the previously undefeated Diego Corrales. That fight ended when his corner threw in the towel after Corrales went down for the fifth time in the bout. Mayweather would suffer his first knockdown of his career in his next contest, a 12 round battle with Carlos Hernandez, though he prevailed there by unanimous decision. A battering of Jesus Chavez on November 10, 2001, where Chavez's corner stopped the fight after round nine, was the last defense of the super featherweight crown. http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=352&cat=boxer

On April 20, 2002, Mayweather faced Jose Luis Castillo for the WBC Lightweight Title. In a controversial unanimous decision, Mayweather was victorious despite fighting with an injured shoulder. Castillo demanded, and was granted, a rematch, which took place on December 17, 2002. Mayweather was victorious again, retaining the title he won eight months earlier.http://boxrec.com/media/index.php?title=Human:352

After another trio of victories, Mayweather faced WBC Light Welterweight champion Arturo Gatti for his crown on June 25, 2005. Gatti would retire at the end of the sixth round, making Mayweather a three division champion. http://boxrec.com/media/index.php?title=Human:352http://www.floydmayweather.com/career/ He would go on to add the IBF Welterweight Title and the IBO welterweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Zab Judah on April 8, 2006 and the IBA Welterweight Title after beating Carlos Manuel Baldomir on November 4, 2006.http://www.floydmayweather.com/career/http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=352&cat=boxer

A May 5, 2007, defeat of Oscar De La Hoya by decision in 12 rounds would give Mayweather his fourth division title when he claimed the WBC light middleweight title, and his demolition of Ricky Hatton on December 8, 2007, by technical knock out in the 10th round would give him his fifth, as he claimed the WBC Welterweight title.http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=352&cat=boxer

Mayweather would announce his retirement from boxing in June of 2008, only to come out in May of 2009 that he would return to the ring to fight Juan Manuel Marquez. That fight took place on September 19, 2009, and Mayweather prevailed by a lopsided unanimous decision to maintain his perfect record. http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=352&cat=boxer

Proposed Fight Against Manny Pacquiao

Fresh off his dismantling of Marquez, there was talk that the next logical fight for Mayweather would be against the man that supplanted him as the best pound for pound fighter in the world, Manny Pacquiao. Originally, the two were slated to do battle on March 13, 2010 in what was being billed as a superfight. The two men were going to split $50 million up front and get a cut of the PPV revenues, pushing each man's purse north of $40 million.

However, there were allegations made that Pacquiao was taking performance enhancing substances, and Mayweather wanted there to be Olympic style drug testing. This allows for the tests to be done at any point from when contracts are signed up to the fight. Pacquiao camp refused to provide these samples, only willing to allow blood to be taken from Pacquiao if the test were scheduled. When the two sides were unable to resolve the issue, the fight was called off. Joshua Clottey stepped in to fight Pacquiao and was beaten in a unanimous decision. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2009/12/mayweather-pacquiao-camps-argue-drugtesting-points.htmlhttp://www.gmanews.tv/story/180124/promoter-says-pacquiao-mayweather-likely-offhttp://www.ringtv.com/blog/1456/top_ranks_statement_on_pacquiaomayweather/
