Florida State University is an American public institution of higher learning. The school is located in the Florida state capital city of Tallahassee. As early as 1823 the legislature in Florida to create a state system of higher education. By 1851, the site opposite of the banks of the Suwannee River was where the the precursor of the current Florida State University was built. There are 16 undergraduate programs to choose from, including: College of Arts & Sciences, College of Business, College of Criminology and Criminal Justice, College of Law, College of Nursing, and Visual Arts, Theatre & Dance. Athletes and Alumni
Florida State has a diverse group of alumni, from politicians such as current Florida Governor Charlie Crist and Senator Mel Martinez, to entertainers such as Burt Reynolds and Christine Lahti, football coaches Mack Brown and Lee Corso, and astronaut Norman Thagard. The sports program competes as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, and is primarily known for the success of the football team under the direction of legendary head coach Bobby Bowden. The school has won two football national championships and produced two Heisman Trophy winners. -
