The Florida State Seminoles men's basketball team competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference of the NCAA. The team is led by coach Leonard Hamilton, who is in his seventh year. While the Seminoles have only had a basketball program for roughly 50 years, they have enjoyed a lot of success in the NCAA Basketball division. Their basketball program was started in 1947 and they made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament 21 years later in 1968. Just four years later, they made it to the national championship game, losing to UCLA. The Seminoles have had several notable players make it to the NBA, including Bob Sura and Sam Cassell. They also had Charlie Ward, who made his fame in college on the football field, bypass the NFL and play several seasons in the NBA for the New York Knicks. The Seminoles have retired 5 jerseys: Sura, Cassell, Cowens, King, and coach Hugh Durham.

During the 2009/10 season, FSU finished the regular season with a 22-9 record and earned an at-large invitation to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament after losing in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. Their appearance in the 2010 NCAA Tournament is their 12th appearance.
