The Florida State Seminoles are a collegiate football team that plays at the Division I, or Football Bowl Subdivision level. They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference, where they have resided since the start of the 1992 college football season.http://www.theacc.com/schools/fsu/acc-fsu-body.html
The Seminoles first began play in 1947 and in that time have amassed a record of 450 wins against 217 defeats, with 17 ties. They have appeared in a staggering 37 bowl games, posting a mark of 21-14-2 in those contests as well. The school boasts two college football national championships, those coming in 1993 and 1999, and they also played for the national title on three other occasions since 1993. Those five title game appearances are more than any other school in that time span.
The school welcomes a new head coach to the team, as Jimbo Fisher took over the position on January 5, 2010, replacing long time coach Bobby Bowden, who retired after coaching at the school from 1976 to 2009, where he posted a mark of 304 wins, 97 losses and four ties. From 1987 to 2000, the Seminoles won at least ten games every year and finished in the top five of the final polls of the season.http://www.seminoles.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/bowden_bobby01.html
The Seminoles struggled in 2009, finishing 6-6 in the regular season, 4-4 in the ACC, tied for third in the Atlantic Division. They went to the Gator Bowl, where in Bowden's final game as head coach, they defeated the West Virginia University Mountaineers of the Big East Conference by a score of 33-21, sending Bowden out as a winner.http://espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=300010052
NCAA Violations
According to reports, Florida State staff reportedly gave "improper assistance" to athletes, which is a serious violation under NCAA policy. The penalties included a loss of scholarships, as well as losing wins in 10 sports, including in football.ESPN.com: NCAA Penalties Extend to 9 FSU Sports
The school appealed the penalty, but their appeal was denied on January 5, 2010 by the NCAA. The NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee responded that "the cooperative efforts of the university in the academic cheating scandal involving 61 Florida State athletes failed to outweigh the aggravating factors in the case." After reviewing the games in question to see if any of the players that were ineligible took part in, twelve wins were eventually taken off the books.http://www2.tbo.com/content/2010/jan/05/051322/fsu-loses-ncaa-appeal-must-vacate-wins/
All-time 'Noles
In addition to the award-winning exploits of Ward and Weinke during their Heisman campaigns, many great Seminoles have had outstanding professional football careers. This list of greats includes Deion Sanders, Fred Biletnikoff, Warrick Dunn, Terrell Buckley, Derrick Brooks, LeRoy Butler, Peter Boulware, Corey Simon, Brad Johnson, Anquan Boldin and Laveraneus Coles. In 2008, safety Myron Rolle won a Rhodes Scholarship and studied neurosurgery at the University of Oxford in the 2009/10 school year to obtain a degree in medical anthropology. Rolle was selected in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. 2010 Florida State Football Preview
The Seminoles look to rebound from another disappointing campaign in 2009, the third time in the last four seasons that they finished 7-6. With Jimbo Fisher taking over for Bowden and new defensive coordinator Mark Stoops in the mix as well, the school will have serious turnover at the top.
The Seminoles will focus their offense around potential Heisman quarterback Christian Ponder, who averaged more than 300 yards passing per game last season before an injury against Clemson University caused him to miss the final three games of the season. The team returns 16 starters from a year ago: 10 on offense and six on a defense that failed to measure up to standards last season.http://www.newsherald.com/sports/samford-84691-football-pat.html
