The Florida Marlins play in the National League's Eastern Division, in Major League Baseball. In it's franchise history the Marlins have won two National League Championships and Two World Series Championships. For a listing of teams, see Major League Baseball Teams. Only a mere five seasons in the League the Marlins would win their first World Series. Led by the offense of Moises Alou, Gary Sheffield, and Edgar Renteria, and the pitching of Kevin Brown, Livan Hernandez and Rob Nenn the Marlins would caputure the National League Wild Card. The Marlins would sweep the San Francisco Giants in three straight games and then defeat the Atlanta Braves four games to two in the National League Championship Series. The Marlins would face the Cleveland Indians in the World Series. The Series would last seven games with the Marlins winning game seven in the 11th inning with a single by Edgar Renteria. The euphoria would be short lived, when the team was broken up by owner Wayne Huizenga days later, citing financial reasons.

2003 World Series Champions
Unlike the 1997 World Series championship which many felt was bought by ownership with high priced free agent signings, the 2003 World Series title was won with excellent pitching. The Marlins had a an impressive rotation which included Josh Beckett, Dontrelle Willis, Brad Penny and anchored by closer Ugueth Urbina. Offensively and defensively the team was led by the fiery catcher Ivan Rodriguez, who shocked baseball experts by signing with the Marlins in the Off season. The Marlins would earn the Wild Card, then go on to face the San Francisco Giants in the National League Division Series. Then in the infamous 2003 National League Championship series would stage a comeback over the Chicago Cubs after being down three games to one. In the World Series the Marlins would defeat the heavily favored New York Yankees defeating the team four games to two with picther Josh Beckett winning the World Series Most Valuable Player Award.
Opening Day 2009
Opening Day for the Florida Marlins highlighted changes made to the team over the offseason, focusing on speed and pitching. The new lead-off hitter Emilio Bonifacio went 4 for 5, gathering three stolen bases and hitting a rare inside-the-park home run. Jorge Cantú, Jeremy Hermida and Hanley Ramírez all hit long home runs, including a grand slam from Ramírez. The Marlins beat the Washington Nationals 12 to 6.
The Marlins started the 2009 season with a sweep of the Nationals on the way to an 87 to 75 season, finishing second in the National League East.
