Florida Gulf Coast University is a public college located in Fort Myers, Florida. Its athletic teams are part of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Noted Programs
The university offers numerous undergraduate and graduate degree programs, most notably anthropology, biotechnology, communication, history, political science, psychology and theater. Additionally, its business, nursing, physical therapy and social work programs are nationally accredited.
University History
The school was originally established in 1991, but did not officially open until 1997. It has grown significantly since it opened, starting with 2,000 students and enrolling more than 8,000 as of mid-2008. The 760-acre campus was selected in 1992, founding university President Roy McTarnaghan was appointed in 1993, and the school's official groundbreaking ceremony took place on November 28, 1995, with more than 600 people attending.
