University History
The school was originally founded in 1961 and later opened, in 1964, providing only graduate degrees. The institution expanded in 1985, when it accepted its first undergraduate students. In 2004, a cooperation with the University of Miami was started, allowing medical students to seamlessly transfer from Florida Atlantic to the University of Miami to complete their degrees.

FAU Shooting
In the early hours of April 30, 2008, two shots were fired at a party on the FAU campus. One person, who was not a student, was slightly injured and the school was placed on lockdown. Classes were canceled, causing some disruption to previously scheduled final exams. 23-year-old Omar Graham was later arrested in connection with the shooting.
