In 1997, Florida Atlantic formed a committee to plan and facilitate adding a football team to the school. Howard Schnellenberger was hired to coach the team and direct football operations. The team played their first official game in 2000, then their first Division 1-A game in 2003. After accepting the invitation to the Sun Belt Conference, the Owls played their first conference game in 2005.
