  • Flatware are the plates and utensils used for eating and serving food. This includes spoons, forks, knives, etc.
  • Material

Modern utensils are usually made of either stainless steel or silver.

Stainless steel is usually the more popular. It is cheaper than silver and easier to care for. It is a good choice for silver that will be used daily. When choosing a stainless steel flatware set look at the chromium and nickel ratio. Usually the ratio will be 18/10, 18/8 or 18/0. The first number is the chromium and the second is the nickel. The higher the nickel value the more durable and shiny the flatware will be.

Silver is nice for special occasions. It can be expensive and requires polishing so that it will not tarnish.

  • How many to buy

The amount of flatware you purchase is dependent on the size of the household. If you have a large household or often have friends over it's a good idea to get at least a place setting for each person.

Sets with 20 pieces are good for singles or couples.

In a family of four an eight place setting is a good idea so you don't have to wash dishes between dinner and breakfast. An eight place setting has approximately 40 to 50 pieces.

Sets wih 12 place settings are available and a good idea for larger families. These sets are 65 to 90 or more pieces.
