  • Flags of Our Fathers is one of two 2006 films directed by Clint Eastwood about the World War II Battle of Iwo Jima, along with Letters from Iwo Jima. Flags relates the story of the battle from the perspective of American soldiers, including the infamous "raising of the flag" on the island that became one of the most recognizable images of the war. Letters depicts the same battle from the Japanese perspective.
  • Background

The rights to Bradley's and Powers' book were originally held by Steven Spielberg, who had planned to make the film himself. Spielberg hired William Broyles Jr. to adapt the script but was not enthusiastic about the finished version. He put the project aside for years, until meeting Eastwood at the 2004 Academy Awards ceremony and handing over the reigns. Spielberg remained on the project as an executive producer. Ryan Phillippe appears in the film as Bradley's father.
  • Awards and Reception

The film was chosen by the National Board of Review as one of the 10 Best Films of 2006. It was nominated for two Oscars - Best Sound and Sound Editing - but did not win, losing out in the Sound Editing category to Eastwood's companion film, Letters from Iwo Jima. The film made about $66 million in worldwide box office, but has become more popular on DVD.
