What's a Virus?
Viruses break down the security measures and are meant to crash, manipulate or control infected computers. They act similarly to spyware but have different purposes.
How to Catch a Virus
Viruses spread when you download an infected executable (.exe) file from a website online. The virus installs itself when you open the program on your computer. When someone creates a virus, they put it on the internet on websites that advertise free downloads or other compelling claims. Users download the virus unknowingly and the virus spreads to their computer. Depending on computer connections, the virus will spread to other people and servers.
Protect Your Computer from Viruses
Keep everything up to date—this includes your software, programs, browsers, antivirus and firewall. Updates will patch any holes in your security and keep your computer safe.
- Don't download anything you don't know about. If you're on a suspicious website, try looking up the name on the website PhishTank.com. This site tracks and locates fake websites.
- If you try to open an executable file, your computer will ask you to confirm that you want to open a file that may modify your system. In addition, antivirus software will usually block and remove harmful files from your computer.
