Traveling the Internet
When you visit a website on your computer, your information travels through a chain of connections to reach the site:
- From your computer
- To the router
- To the service provider
- To the internet
- To the website
- Back to your computer in reverse order
Your information passes back and forth in this way every time you visit a website. It can be dangerous because you don't know where the physical lines are and cannot see if someone else on the internet is viewing your connection.
Encryption and Secure Connections
You can protect yourself on the internet by using a secure connection or encryption. This works as if there were a combination lock on both ends of the connection. Both sides must use their "combination" to unlock the connection. This can help protect critical information when you're using a bank or social platform website that contains personal details.
