Instructions for Installing a Processor
The processor is one of the components of a computer you need to be the most careful with. It is the component that is most sensitive to damage and abrasion.
To upgrade your processor, you're going to want to acquire thermal grease (also called thermal gel, thermal compound, thermal paste, heat paste, heat sink paste, heat transfer compound, heat transfer paste or heat sink compound) before you begin. This is a fluid substance that increases the thermal conductivity of a thermal interface by filling microscopic air gaps that rest between imperfectly flat surfaces. You absolutely must have this. Think of it in relation to having oil in your car's engine.
1. Before you begin messing with the motherboard, you'll want to remove the power cord first.
2. Next, unplug the fan power for your heat sink fan. In the video it's a small white clip that's attached to the fan. After it's unplugged, you'll be able to remove the fan.
3. Now, the processor will be free. Flip up the lever next to the CPU to unlatch it from the motherboard. Once unlatched, gently tug and lift the processor up off the board.
4. When you're installing the new processor, you can see which way it is supposed to correctly fit on the motherboard by referring to a small arrow at the corner of the processor. Match this small arrow with the small arrow at the corner of the CPU slot on the motherboard.
5. Set the processor in the correct place. There is no need to apply much pressure as you set it. 6. Once in place, lock it down by pushing down the lever that latches it. The lever should be parallel with the motherboard when in place.
7. Now, apply the thermal grease to the surface of the processor that will touch the fan that rests on top. Also, apply the thermal grease to the surface of the fan that will touch the processor.
8. Drop the heat sink back down and plug in the small white power clip that's attached to the fan.
9. When you turn your computer on, definitely make sure that the fan on top of the processor is spinning. If not, turn your computer off immediately because processors get very hot and you do not want to fry it.
