Now That You've Located the Virus
After using process of elimination to determine that your computer is running slowly due to a spyware software problem, you will need to locate and remove the spyware or virus.
Using Your Antivirus
Run your computer's antivirus program to identify the virus. Different antivirus programs work in different ways but they all perform the same functions. For example, Sean uses Windows Defender to perform a full scan of the computer system which then locates the harmful files. To remove the file:
- Click on the harmful file.
- Set the action to "remove."
- Apply the action to the system.
If your antivirus is not able to remove the virus, you should look up the virus on the internet. Find another antivirus program that has the capabilities to remove your specific virus.
Using the Manual Registry
Some viruses and spyware must be removed from your system manually by using the computer's registry. To locate your registry:
- Go to the Start menu.
- Click "Run."
- Type and search for "regedit."
- Your computer's registry will appear.
- Delete the appropriate item from the registry
Use caution when deleting items from your registry. If you delete the wrong file inside the registry, you can crash your system.
