Upgrade the Processor on Your PC

How to Update Your Processor

The processor is the bottleneck of your computer. While it's the most vital part, it's also the least likely to be upgraded. When you do upgrade, you'll want to replace your motherboard as well.

You need to find out what kind of socket you currently have on your motherboard to figure out what type of processor you'll need. You can do this by learning about your current processor.

You can obtain a free program from Download.com called CPU-Z that will scan your system and tell you its specifications.

The program will tell you what kind of socket you have so you can find an upgraded processor that will fit.

Also, Newegg.com is a good website to purchase hardware upgrades from.

When it comes to processors, you're basically limited to two main choices: AMD or Intel. AMD's tend to run hotter, so you'll probably need a little more cooling power, but they can also run faster and give you more bang for your buck.

Things to consider:

  • Operating Frequency
  • Cache (L2 and L3)
  • 32 bit or 64 bit
  • Multi-Core
