Playing their first season in 2002, the FIU Golden Panthers were initially an independent team in the NCAA Division I-AA. In the history of the FIU Golden Panthers through the 2010 NFL Draft, two of their players have gone on to appear in the National Football League. FIU Invited to the Little Caesars Bowl
At a press conference held in early December 2010, Peter Garcia, the athletic director at FIU, announces that the Golden Panthers received an invitation to the Little Caesars Bowl, which was their first bowl invitation in school history. Mark Rosenberg, president of the school, also speaks about the football team, speaking to the critics who said "it couldn't be done" when the school said they wanted to play football, build a stadium, win a championship and reach a bowl game.
