Fishing is the activity of hunting for fish. It is done both for a food source and as a sport. There are several different types of fishing, and each has its own equipment and relevant information. Different areas of the world provide different fishing conditions, but fishing is done worldwide.
Types of Fishing
Depending on the area being fished and the type of fish being caught, there are different techniques and equipment needed. - Saltwater Fishing - fishing in any ocean or other body of saltwater
- Deep Sea Fishing - a type of saltwater fishing done from a boat on the open ocean
- Freshwater Fishing - fishing done in lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, and other bodies of fresh water
- Bowfishing - using a special bow and arrow to catch the fish
- Flyfishing - using a special type of lure, called a fly, and casting in a particular way to catch fish
- Ice Fishing - fishing done on a frozen body of water, through a hole in the ice
- Spearfishing - using a spear to catch fish
- Trolling - dragging baits or lures through the water with a boat to hook fish
- Match Fishing - competitive fishing
There are also types of fishing named after the fish being hunted, such as bass fishing.
Fishing Equipment
There is a vast array of fishing equipment on the market, for every type of fishing. Beyond the actual tools needed to catch the fish, there are many accessories for comfort or style. Knowing the type of fish being hunted is very helpful when choosing equipment, as different baits or lures attract different fish, and different types of poles or nets are needed for different fish as well.

Not all equipment is needed for each type of fishing, and some types need special equipment, as in the case of bowfishing, spearfishing or ice fishing.
