History
Fried fish was a common dish in England as early as the 1830s; "fried fish warehouses" are mentioned in Oliver Twist, by Charles Dickens. The first fish and chip shop opened in Mossley, England, in 1863. It was the prototypical fast food, cheap, quick and unhealthy and considered a scourge by nutritionists.
