FIRST Robotics is an international robotics competition for high school students. Each January, teams are given the objectives of the year's game and a set of parts. Teams must build their 140lb robots within certain specifications over the course of six weeks. Teams compete regionally at first and then compete at a national level.
Lego League
Since 1999, FIRST has organized the Lego League, a competition for younger students, as a compliment to its First Robotics Competition. In the Lego League, students ranging in age from nine to 14 use specialized Lego kits to build machines and solve problems. FIRST Lego League: Home page
Breakaway
In 2010, the game challenge was called Breakaway. Six FIRST teams competed in each match. They were divided into two alliances, red and blue. The goal was to score soccer balls in corner goals, while traversing bumps and also having the robot lift itself up off the ground at the end of the match for bonus points.
