First Battle of Bull Run

The First Battle of Bull Run was the first major battle in the American Civil War fought near Manassas, Virginia on July 21, 1861.

Casualties

  1. Union casualties and losses: 2,896 (406 deaths, 1,124 wounded 1,312 captured or missing)
  2. Confederate casualties and losses: 1, 982 (387 deaths, 1582 wounded 13 missing)

Legacy/Aftermath

  1. One major outcome from this battle was the battlefield confusion between the two flags. This led to the adoption of the Confederate Battle Flag, which eventually became the a popular symbol of the Confederacy and of the South in general.
  2. Colonel Francis S. Bartow was the first Confederate brigade commander to be killed in the Civil War
  3. P. G. T. Beauregard was considered the hero of the battle and was promoted that to full general in the Confederate Army
