  • ' fIREHOSE was an alternative rock band from the mid-'80s to the early-'90s. Frontman and bassist Mike Watt and drummer George Hurley were former members of the band Minutemen, joined by guitarist/vocalist Ed Crawford.
  • Sound

fIREHOSE retained many of influences of the Minutemen, including jazz and folk, but were less a punk band than a 1980s alternative rock band, in the same league with R.E.M., The Replacements and many lesser knowns. Crawford's vocals and guitar could hardly be called polished, but compared to the chaotic energy of deceased Minutemen frontman D. Boon, his addition to the band made for a more accessible sound, often verging on folk-rock and pop-rock. While the heightened emphasis on professionalism may have earned fIREHOSE its short-lived major-label deal, it did not lead to sales or notoriety beyond the college circuit.
