Tournament Structure
The NCAA men's tournament begins with 65 teams. The two lowest-seeded teams compete in the Play-in Game to determine which will participate in the main tournament. Once the top 64 teams are established, each competes in one of four regional brackets, which are each operated in a single-elimination manner. The winners of each of the regional brackets go on to play in the Final Four.
The NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament operates in the same manner, however there is no play-in game, with only 64 teams competing in the tournament. The Women's Final Four is generally played during the same time as the men's, but offset by one day.
