  • Other Gaming Marathons Gone Awry

    1. In 2005, a 28-year-old South Korean man identified only as "Lee" died after a 50 hour gaming marathon in an internet cafe. Lee had been playing the real-time strategy game StarCraft, and had not slept or eaten sufficiently. It should be noted that, in South Korea, "professional gamers" are treated like rock stars and can make upwards of $100,000 per year.BBC News: S Korean dies after games session (August 10, 2005)
    2. In July of 2007, an 18-year-old Brazilian boy named Aguinaldo César Alves was struck by lightning while playing—ironically—Mortal Kombat. Alves was playing with one controller in his hands, and another in his mouth. He explained his experience thusly: "When I regained consciousness, I thought I was dead. I stood up looking back, to see if my body was dead on the floor." This freak occurrence invited puns from blogs and the gaming community, who used words like "fatality," and references to the character Raiden—who uses lightning-based attacks—to make light of the story.Gizmodo: 18-yo Struck by Lightning Playing Mortal Kombat, Raiden Not Involved (July 26, 2007)
