From now until November 2009, teams will be weeded away and the final 32 teams will head to South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

World Cup Qualifiers Background and History
Qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup games is an arduous task. The only team guaranteed a slot is the host nation of South Africa.
Beginning in March 2007, 204 teams started the journey towards the World Cup. In November 2007, the competition was down to 156 teams when qualifying groups were established. In each group, teams have gradually been disqualified based on their performance in confederation qualifying matches.
Play will continue until only 31 teams remain. The final 31 teams and the South African team will move on to the 2010 World Cup tournament scheduled for June 11, 2010- July 11, 2010.
