Care and Planting
If planting a ficus outdoors, choose a sunny location where roots will have room to spread. This location should also drain well. If planting ficus in a pot, choose a pot that is large enough to accommodate root growth. Potted ficus trees will need to be re potted when the roots begin to grow through the hole in the bottom of the pot. Drop a handful of pebbles in the bottom of the pot (prior to planting) to ensure adequate drainage. This is a tropical plant and good drainage is essential to its health.http://www.gardenguides.com/70043-grow-ficus-tree-outdoors.html
A ficus will need a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight daily.
Recently planted or potted ficus trees will need to be watered weekly as they establish roots and begin to grow. Once they are established, they may be watered once every-other week.http://www.gardenguides.com/70043-grow-ficus-tree-outdoors.html
Use caution when deciding to fertilize a potted ficus as this speeds growth and may require more frequent re potting than is healthy for the tree. Fertilize outdoor ficus plants in the spring with a granular fertilizer.http://www.gardenguides.com/70043-grow-ficus-tree-outdoors.html
