Festivus poles are tall non-decorated aluminum poles used in the holiday Festivus. The holiday was invented in 1997 when first being featured on the show Seinfeld. The first poles were aluminum but any metal or otherwise pole-like material can be used in its place.
Background
Festivus was started by Kevin O'Keefe as a holiday celebrated by his family, thought without a pole. His son went on to be a writer on the popular show Seinfeld, in one episode he wrote in that the Costanza family celebrated Festivus where the Festivus pole was created. Ever since then it has created a culture of people that celebrate this holiday, and many businesses that sell Festivus Poles.
Uses
Festivus poles are used as the centerpiece of the Festivus holiday. They are usually unadorned, but individual families often create their own Festivus rules.
