Fertility

What is Fertility?

The term "fertility" refers to a person's ability to produce offspring. Getting to know your body and the signs associated with your most fertile days is an important aspect of your sexual health. If you want to become pregnant it will help you to achieve those results more quickly. If you want to avoid having children, understanding your fertility will enable you to avoid having unprotected intercourse during your peak fertile times.

While it is most likely conception will occur within 24 hours after ovulation has occurred it is very important to remember that pregnancy can be achieved anytime a fertile couple has unprotected sex.

Obesity is An Enemy of Fertility

Females who are overweight or obese have a much greater chance of having reproductive disorders than females who are a normal weight.

Women who are overweight are more likely to have irregular menses and frequent anovular cycles. A large number of obese and or overweight women who suffer from infertility have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). This disorder has the characteristics of chronic anovulation, irregular menses with or without hyperandrogenism and hyperinsulinemia.

Anovulation is a serious problem for many women with a BMI greater than 30 because of the abnormal secretion of hypothalamic GnRH, pituitary LH and FSH. Hyperinsulinemia that is often seen with the insulin resistant state; even without PCOS, can have a negative impact on fertility all on its own.

Doctors have not yet determined the exact reason that obesity causes infertility; however, it is obvious that there is a definite link between insulin-mediated hyperstimulation of ovarian steroid production and decreased sex hormone-binding globulin and infertility.

Early pregnancy loss after IVF, lower pregnancy rates, lower fertilization, higher gonadotropins requirements, along with a poor response to gonadotropins are all linked to obesity.

Obese women who have suffered infertility for many years often find that they are able to conceive; sometimes quite easily, as they begin to have normal cycles again.

Clomid or Serophene (clomiphene citrate)

Clomid or Serophene (clomiphene citrate):

rug is most commonly referred to, is very often the first drug doctors use to treat infertility; especially in women who do not ovulate normally. It is considered one of the safest fertility drugs available and has been prescribed for more than 25 years. Most health insurances will cover all or most of the cost of this medication.

Marketed under two brand names, Clomid and Serophene are antiestrogen drugs. By stimulating the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, the ovaries are stimulated for the purpose of producing and releasing eggs. GnRH, FSH and LH are released from these glands.

How Is It Prescribed:

Clomiphehe Citrate is available by prescription only. The initial dosage is usually one 50mg tablet taken orally once a day for five consecutive days. The first pill is taken on the third, fourth, or fifth day of your menstrual cycle. Around the seventh day after the last pill has been taken ovulation should occur.

If ovulation does not occur on the initial dosage, most doctors increase the mg by 50mg per cycle until ovulation does occur. 150mg is the maximum recommended dosage per day of Clomid.

Although considered to be a safe drug, most doctors will only leave their patients on Clomid for six months once ovulation has been induced. If pregnancy has not been achieved by that point, a different medication will probably be prescribed.

Side Effects of Clomiphehe Citrate:

The side effects of Clomid are usually very mild, making this another excellent first choice for infertility treatment. These side effects include: hot flashes, blurred vision, nausea, bloating, and headache. A change in cervical mucous is also a common side effect of the fertility drug Clomid. Because of this it is often difficult to know exactly when ovulation is occurring. Although not extremely common, Clomid sometimes causes a more acidic environment than normal, making it difficult for the sperm to enter the uterus.

All fertility drugs increases the odds of multiple pregnancies; however, Clomid is less likely to produce multiple births than injectable hormones or other traditional fertility medications.

Success Rates With Clomid:

Clomid is not only popular because of its safety, mild side effects and cost effectiveness. It's most alluring quality is that is simply works. In fact, up to 80% of women who take this medication will ovulate. About half of those who ovulate will become pregnant. Most pregnancies that occur due to ovulation induction on Clomid occur within the first three months of beginning treatment with the drug Serophene.

Clomid is sometimes used in conjunction with other fertility medications as an infertility treatment.
